Adenoids do important work as infection fighters for babies and little kids. But they become less important as a kid gets older and the body develops other ways to fight germs. Adenoids usually shrink after about age 5, and by the teenage years they often practically disappear. However, sometimes germ fighting adenoids can swell up and cause breathing problems in children.

Sanand
DiGeorge syndrome, is a disease caused by the deletion of a small segment of chromosome 22 of the human body. While the symptoms can vary, they often include congenital heart problems, specific facial features, frequent infections, developmental delay, learning problems and cleft palate.
Sanand, a 3 year old boy was diagnosed with congenital heart disease when he was just 10 days old. This led to a series of medical tests and evaluations. A medical geneticist found out Sanand suffered from Di George Syndrome. A detailed look revealed the boy had a Cleft palate (defect in the bone covering the roof of the mouth) and even undescended testis. Owing the his defects Sanand would often aspirate his feeds making him sick with pneumonia.
A tube was inserted into his stomach directly through the skin over his abdomen to help him feed. Around 6 months Sanand's heart condition began to take a toll on him. The blood from the right side of his heart wasn't reaching his lungs like it was supposed to. Moreover, a hole between his lower heart chambers had caused his heart to become weak. Sanand's blood oxygen levels began to dip and he fell short of breath. He underwent a life saving Blalock Taussig shunt which helped him improve temporarily.
In early 2019 Sanand was brought to Aster Medcity with breathlessness and falling oxygen levels. He was evaluated and found to have the previously done shunt blocked. His blood oxygen levels were also dipping. The Pediatric Cardiac surgery team at Aster Medcity performed a complex corrective surgery on Sanand. An artificial tube was fashioned resembling the pulmonary artery. A new pulmonary valve was hand sewn into this tube by the surgeons. This tube was used as means to connect Sanand's right side heart chamber to its intended destination, his lungs. The hole in his heart was also closed. Sanand recovered completely. His oxygen levels became normal and his breathing improved.
Aster Sick Kids Foundation & Aster DM Foundation sponsored a major chunk of Sanand's treatment from the beginning to till the dates
