Organizations like ASK is stepping in to fill this void. We extended our support to Nadel a nine-year-old who required a hip surgery to walk with a normal gait. His parents continued to postpone his surgery for financial reasons. Doctors felt that any further delay in corrective surgery would reduce his chances for good results. ASK stepped in to support and subsidize his treatment expenses. He underwent surgery and walked in to the OPD with a smile and confidence for follow up in Kochi, Kerala
Saneesh is a nurse who works in a Children's ICU. He has seen many children in serious condition at work. All those experiences were not enough for him to cope when his one-year old sustained accidental burn injury all over his face. He was heartbroken and his child required urgent plastic surgery procedures to prevent lifelong scarring of the baby's face. He also stood the risk of permanent damage to his eyelids which will hamper his vision. He was not financially prepared for this emergency. ASK supported him and child underwent surgery successfully. His baby was discharged home and the treating doctors are confident about good recovery.
We met Muhammed Adam in a camp at Peringanam. This cute looking little boy walked in clinging on to his grandmother’s fingers. He was not making eye contact with anybody. His grandmother, Sulekha was very worried that Adam who was not speaking a word even at four years of age. Adam was orphaned soon after birth. His mother died during delivery and father left him to set up another family. He was looked after by his grandparents who were leading a hand to mouth life. His speech delay was primarily due to social isolation. Doctors found to him to be an otherwise healthy child. His requirements were more social than medical. ASK felt that we should bring back this little boy to life to educate and empower him. He will have to grow up as an independent educated and confident man to fight the battles of life. We initiated him on speech therapy. He would have to join a regular school. We at ASK enrolled him in a nearby private school. The ASK volunteers supported his school fees, uniform, books and other admissions costs. He started school this June. Adam is more interactive and started to talk in sentences now. We are overwhelmed at the progress he is making. We will continue to provide support to him thorough his schooling. We at ASK to believe that Cure to an illness does not always come only in medicine bottles.
Pineoblastoma is a rare tumor of the brain. Second standard student, Amitha was very unfortunate to have been diagnosed with this tumor last year. She underwent surgery in 2017. She was advised to undergo Chemotherapy and radiotherapy. However, her parents out of financial constraints and apprehension did not follow up the surgery with further treatment. Her parents were shocked when she had more symptoms few weeks back. Doctors examined and informed her parents that the tumor had recurred. She would need surgery and follow up chemotherapy. Amitha's parents who were already financially drained were not able to afford the treatment. ASK steeped in to help Amitha. Treatment expenses was subsidized. We conducted a crowd funding campaign to support her. ASK also contributed to her treatment expenses. She underwent the surgery successfully and is on follow up treatment. ASK had ensured that she will complete her full course of treatment and give her the best opportunity to come back to life.
Ten-year-old Fathima’s life is one the most inspiring stories we have ever heard. She was a lovely butterfly of her class who could sing, recite Holy Quran completely and always stood first in her studies. Life changed when she started have fits one evening. Fits would never stop despite multiple medicines. She fought a rare disease called Auto immune Encephalitis. She was in induced coma for more than a month on a ventilator. A multidisciplinary team of doctors fought tirelessly to help her recover. Her father Rafeeq, a taxi driver, could not handle this social and financial situation. Her family approached ASK for support. ASK chipped in with financial assistance. The hospital recognized this unusual situation and waived off her treatment expenses so Fathima is given the best possible chance to recover. She made slow recovery and was tapered off her medicines over next one month. The media published a news item on Fathimas amazing fight against her illness. Kerala’s health minister Mrs.Shylaja teacher took note of this story and engaged social justice department to support Fathima for ongoing care. The state took over her ongoing treatment expenses in association with ASK. Fathima is back to her school now after missing a complete school term. Fathima’s fight back was possible because the medical team, Aster sick kids and the state government rallied around her. She taught us not to lose hope and strive hard for a child so that all kind souls around will come together to make the impossible possible.
Mr Manjunath is an Uber driver in Bangalore. His family lives in Tumkur a nearby town. His only son Thanmay was diagnosed to have a tumor in his liver. The only option left for him was to undergo a liver transplant. Manjunath donated his liver in April 2016. Thanmay made good recovery. However, he was noted to develop a narrowing of his portal vein in 2018. This warranted an intervention to dilate his portal vein and palcemnet of a stent to prevent this from happening again. The cost of the procedure was unaffordable for the family particularly in the context of a recent Liver transplant surgery. ASK helped the family with financial support. Thanmay underwent the procedure at Aster CMI hospital in Bangalore. He was discharged home healthy. We wish a healthy future for our Little Thanmay.
Swalih is a 11-month-old baby who developed severe pneumonia and was admitted to a nearby hospital. He was admitted to Pediatric intensive care unit at ASTER Medcity for ongoing care. His father, Noushad is cab driver. He was not in a position to afford intensive care expenses. He was very motivated to provide the best possible care to his son and a give him the best chance of recovery. He approached ASK for help and we contributed to his financial expenses. Swaliah made good recovery after a weeks treatment in Pediatric ICU.
Nahas is a daily wage worker from Fort Kochi. His joy knew no bounds when his wife conceived their first baby. However, Sowmya went in labor at seventh month of pregnancy. She delivered an extremely premature baby weighing only about 500 gms. Nahas was determined to provide best possible treatment for his child. Treatment options for premature babies are expensive, complicated and quite prolonged. He approached ASK for treatment support. ASK contributed to the treatment expenses and subsidized the bill. Their baby remained in the NICU for three months and overcame all the complications of prematurity. The baby was discharged home healthy after two months of hospital stay. ASK is proud to be able provide the best chance for this little fighter to grow up as a healthy adult.
Master Sourav is a four-year-old boy who hails from Kondazhy village in Thrissur. His father works as a cook for daily wages. He developed a fever and had fits which was difficult to control. He was admitted to a hospital in Thrissur and then referred to Kochi for specialized care. He was managed by the Ped neurology and Intensive care team. He required prolonged ventilation and seizure medications. He was in the ICU for a month and discharged home. His parents were not able to afford the treatment cost. ASK subsidized treatment cost and contributed to the treatment expenses.
